Johnny W. Wigley, age 88 of Tyler, Texas passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at his residence. He was born on September 25, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas to John Harmon “Blackie” Wigley and Ida Mae Baldwin Wigley

He spent his early childhood and began school at Harlandale in San Antonio. His family moved to Richland, Texas at start of WW II, where he graduated from high school in 1949 Johnny attended Navarro College and then joined US Air Force in 1950. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, he began his teaching career in 1951 at Purdon, Texas while attending college in the summer. He earned his Master's degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas in 1973. Johnny was a teacher, coach, and administrator through the years he spent in education. Johnny worked in Purdon, Emhouse, Mildred Palmer, Blooming Grove, Venus, Cotton Center, Stinnett, and Brewster, Kansas. He retired from his career in education after 45 years of service to many communities.

He enjoyed reading, carpentry, wine making, fishing, collecting things, and going to garage sales (he could spot those signs a mile away). Johnny loved kar-e-okee (“Pistol Packing Mama” was his go to song), spending time with the family and friends. He was a father figure to many, beloved Dad, brother, uncle, teacher, coach and friend. He had a funny sense of humor and a dry wit, that he used as a teaching tool in school and in teaching life lessons.

He was a good man and a great dad. He also coached youth football, basketball and baseball and was a founding father of the Mildred Little League and served as the president the first few years. He also brought Mildred Yearbook to life and served as the sponsor (72 – 74). His son, Ronny said that he grew taller than Johnny, but his dad’s life cast a far greater and longer shadow. Johnny was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Barry, Texas.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters; Allie Mae Davis and Georgia Ann Allen.

He is survived by his children; Ronny Wigley, Johnny Wigley and wife Cindy, Zoeanne Barlett, Kelly Wigley, Tyger Dunaway and husband, John Michael, and Casey Khoury and husband, Mansour; his grandchildren; Jarrett Wigley, Levi Wigley, Hallie and Chester Humbert, Wyatt and Blayne Crum, Harrison Crum, Stormy Crum, Rylan Dunaway, Jackson Dunaway, Mila, Owen and Laia Khoury. He is also survived by his brother Buddy Harmon Wigley and wife Mary; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, November, 30, 2019 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at Corley Funeral Home with the funeral service following immediately at 1:00 PM with Mr. Elvin Richards officiating. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery with Levi Wigley, Wyatt Crum, Harrison Crum, Edward Davis, Blake Wigley, Steven Hand, Rhett Lisman and Shane Collins serving at pallbearers.

Memorials may be made in care of Ronny Wigley at 12190 County Road 1206, Tyler, Texas 75703.

An online guestbook is available at and selecting the Johnny W. Wigley obituary.

Mr. Johnny would come visit me while I was volunteering at our church during the day. We always had the most amazing conversations and he had a down to earth perspective on everything. I was always eager to see which pocket pistol he was carrying and more so to here the stories on each particular treasure. He always told me that as long as he was around he had my back. One day he showed me ( if I remember correctly) a long barrel black powder revolver that was older than my granddad. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how he had it concealed in his front pocket.

I used to giggle to myself to watch the widows in our church blush when he took exception to them and commented on something about him. He was a true gentleman and he will be truly missed.

Awe but we have the blessed assurance of seeing him again.
