On Monday, John Dempsey Myers was called home to reunite with his heavenly Father. John was never a stranger to anyone. He was a loyal, compassionate friend to all that had the privilege of knowing him. He was quick to smile and even quicker to make others smile. He is survived by his beautiful bride Peggy Darlene Rich Myers. Together they cherished 68 years of love and companionship. Known by many as “Big John,” he will forever be remembered for the endless love that he so generously shared with everyone he met.

John entered the world on July 15, 1931 and was the son of W.C. (Kelly) Myers and Mary Elizabeth Dempsey Myers of Navarro County. John was the second of six siblings. He grew up going to school in Mildred and graduated from Mildred High School in 1948. Shortly thereafter, in 1950, he joined the Army National Guard. Throughout his service he was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8). John worked tirelessly as a rural postman for the United States Postal Service. He delivered mail via jeep and also on foot throughout Navarro County. After 30 years he retired and enjoyed working part-time at Myers’ Prosthetics. He cherished the time he spent working with his family.

John was a faithful and dedicated member of the Corsicana Masonic Lodge No. 174 A.F. & A.M. As a long-standing member, he received a 60-year membership pin. He was a past Grand Worshipful Master, past Secretary of the Grand Masonic Lodge, a 32-degree Master Mason, a Shriner, and dedicated countless hours assisting the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. In 1992, he was presented with the Golden Trowel award which is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a freemason. He also holds the state-wide record for being the longest serving lodge secretary for 38 straight years. He also spent over fifty years assisting with the Eastern Star and he served as a Worthy Patron from 1971-1972. Finally, he served in the Navarro County Shriners as a member of the “Jeep Herders” in 1990.
John met Peggy Darlene Rich Myers, the love of his life, in Corsicana in 1950. They married the following year in 1951 and had been married for 68 years. They would go on to have 3 sons, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. Family was the most important aspect of John’s life. Together they were lifelong members of Northside Baptist Church in Corsicana. As a member for over 50 years he was known for his fellowship and willingness to help anyone in need. He was an excellent example of steward leadership and was passionate about spreading the love of Jesus Christ to others.
John was preceded in death by his parents: W.C. (Kelly) and Mary Myers; his brother Calvin Myers and his beloved middle son Nathan Paul Myers (all formerly of Corsicana).

He is survived by his wife Peggy Darlene Rich Myers (of Corsicana); his brother Larry Myers and his wife Becky; his sisters Dorothy Harris, Jennette Whitehead, and Charlotte Groening and her husband Kenneth; his son John Dempsey Myers, II and his wife Becky Olsen Myers (of Palestine), his daughter-in law Christine Odling Myers, his son Rory Wade Myers and his wife Frances Pinkerton Myers (all of Corsicana). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sarah Beth Myers and Shawn Smith (of Tyler), Haley and Justin Weiner (of Tyler), Bryan Myers (of Corsicana), Nathan John and Colby Myers (of Corsicana), Rory Wade Myers, II (of Corsicana), David and Sarah Myers (of Haslett), and Lacy Myers and Taylor Barlow (of Corsicana). John is also survived by great-grandchildren: Wesley and Grant Weiner, Lauren and Bryanna Myers, Avery Layne and Nathan Parker Myers, Alex and Aria Myers, Aiden and Jollen Dempsey Rodrigues and Abigal Barlow. Finally, he is also survived by many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

A service honoring John’s life has been scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Northside Baptist Church at 1:00pm. with Dr. Rick Lamb officiating. Shawn Smith, Justin Weiner, Bryan Myers, Nathan John Myers, Rory Wade Myers, II, David Rich Myers, and Taylor Barlow will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

John’s family would like to thank Dr. Kent Rogers and his staff along with Rose Rash and the staff at Angels at Home. Their care and support will forever be appreciated.

Respectfully, in lieu of flowers please make charitable donations in honor of John to Northside Baptist Church or Corsicana Masonic Lodge No. 174 A.F. & A.M.

Big John was truly one of a kind, he profoundly impacted all those around him, and will be missed beyond measure.

An online guestbook is available at and selecting the John D. Myers obituary.
